Why We Exist
WHAT IS STAYALTERED?

StayAltered accelerates the success and impact of hosts nurturing more Purposeful Hospitality.

StayAltered Host Alliance unites the world’s best independent hosts to cooperatively nurture more equitable, sustainable, and shareable hospitality.

WHY does stayaltered exist?

Hospitality is a double-edged sword.

Wielded responsibly, it uplifts entire populations and fosters life-changing perspectives that transform individuals into global citizens. Held in the wrong hands, however, and it destroys ecosystems, sharpens inequality, and erases lifeways.

Facing irreversible climate change, global unrest, and social isolationism, the world is reckoning with a reality the industry denies: Hospitality, sold as a force for good, failed to keep the promises it made to its guests, as well as the people who care for the guests, let alone give back more than it takes from its communities.

The world is filled with hosts who believe hospitality can and should be as positively impactful for all as it has been profitable for the privileged few. StayAltered helps hosts be the change they want to see in the world.

WHAT IS PURPOSEFUL HOSPITALITY?

Purposeful Hospitality nurtures more hospitable people and places on our planet:
β—¦ Equitable hospitality for all People.
β—¦ Sustainable and eco-efficient Places.
β—¦ Shareable practices for our Planet.

These principles – known as Our 3 P’s – are our criteria, our standards, and our vision. Purposeful Hospitality can be distinguished from Industrial:

Industrial Hospitality provides shelter and service for financial profit only:
β—¦ Shelter designed to separate “Them” from “Us”.
β—¦ Service offered only to paying guests.
β—¦ Profit created by workers for a few owners.

WHAT DOES PURPOSEFUL HOSPITALITY LOOK OR FEEL LIKE?

Short answer: Purposeful Hospitality should look different but feel similar everywhere you stay.

Long answer: Purposeful Hospitality is indescribable, but the moment you feel it, you know it. Two examples. Casa Pancha is a bright and modern boutique hotel with private and shared rooms in Mexico City’s hip Condesa neighborhood. Song of Travel is a small hostel with a big personality (it was built to look like a three-story boombox (yes, seriously)) at the gateway to Inle Lake, Myanmar.

By appearances, neither looks anything like the other. Stay at either, however, and you’ll feel a similar “je ne sais quoi” of comfort and conviviality. It’s the best of both a cozy home with your closest friends with a very hip and happening hotel, combined into something better than either on its own.

We know this wasn’t a very satisfying answer. Let us mull it over, take another few whacks at rewriting this, and we’ll update this when we’ve nailed it.

HOW IS STAYALTERED DIFFERENT?

By uniting independent hosts committed to Purposeful Hospitality together – and by organizing with the same equitable, sustainable, and shareable principles we preach – our hosts gain all of the strengths of a global hospitality company without any of the weaknesses of a chain or franchise.

HOW IS STAYALTERED BETTER THAN MARRIOTT, AIRBNB, OR OYO?

We believe StayAltered is neither better nor worse – we’re different. For example, if you own a a 300-room property in a central business district of a financial hub, you are almost certainly targeting a business clientele, and companies such as Marriott are much better suited for you to find success.

Since moving aggresively towards become an OTA like Booking or Expedia, Airbnb is less a competitor than it is another booking channel – one that offers unique benefits but many drawbacks for hosts. Airbnb is not as a threat, it is merely another channel our hosts must develop strategies and manage for.

Few travel startups have quickly risen as high (or rapidly stumbled as fast) as Oyo. Their journey has served as a cautionary tale for going the VC-backed, build-and-break, growth-at-all-costs route. Though StayAltered is going in the same direction, our path forward is different. Our hosts come alongside with us as member-owners, not as contract-locked customers. We do not re-design properties nor change how hosts manage staff. We trust our hosts. In return, they trust us.
