About Us

Who We Are

Altering Hospitality is a purpose-first, for-profit company founded in 2022 to help the world unlock the joy, value, and meaning of caring for each other and all life on earth.

StayAltered is a worldwide community of independent hosts, global travelers, and local neighbors who believe global tourism must benefit local communities.

Our Initiatives

Together, StayAltered and Altering Hospitality develop the community-powered hospitality products and programs the world needs to stay together and support each other.

The Welcome App is the first product developed by, with, and for our community – and enables global travelers to support local communities and independent hosts to get more revenue, reviews, and referral bookings.

Our Names

Why StayAltered and Altering Hospitality? Well, it's a triple entendre.

  1. Alternative accommodations.
  2. Alternative ways of living that care for each other and all life on earth.
  3. The life-altering moments that remind us what really matters.

One day, we'll dive into each of these a little bit more. But for now, we'll leave it here.

Our Impact

The travel and tourism industries distribute $10 trillion globally, but most of it goes to big chains and intermediaries – not to local businesses and communities.

Foreign-owned chains recirculate less than 15% of revenue back into local communities. Meanwhile, intermediaries take up 15-50% in commissions and fees. When all is said and done, as little as 5% of our travels ends up in the hands of the people who live in the places we visit.

Our solution is to do more than support local businesses – it's also to help local businesses support each other as well. This is why we are building the community-powered products independent hosts need to get more revenue, reviews, and referral bookings from global travelers as well as the collective programs they need to grow stronger businesses with greater impact.

When travelers StayAltered, they 3x the dollars they spend in destinations through induced and and indirect effects. StayAltered can 3x the positive benefits of the $10 trillion travel and tourism industries.

Our Origins

Our story began in 2015, when we discovered the power of independent hosts to uplift local communities – as well as the extraordinary challenges independent hosts face.
